Our shared responsibility on the internet: why we should support serious AM manufacturers
In an era where additive manufacturing (AM) – aka 3D printing – is growing at a breakneck pace, it has never been easier to find parts, prototypes and custom solutions online. But accessibility also comes with responsibility. As a consumer, car builder, hobbyist or professional user, we must be aware of the risks involved when buying from private individuals without quality control, warranty or traceability.
AM manufacturing requires more than just a 3D printer!
Additive manufacturing is not just a push of a button. Material selection, design knowledge, process settings and quality control determine whether a product lasts – or breaks when you need it most.
When parts are assembled into vehicles, machines or functional projects, the responsibility is even greater.
A serious AM manufacturer:
uses approved materials and documented settings
quality tests and iterates their models
is responsible for ensuring that the product works as promised
offers support, receipt and warranty
complies with laws and regulations regarding product safety and consumer rights
It's a security you can never get from an unknown private individual online.
The risks of buying from private individuals
It is often tempting to buy something “cheap” or “home-printed” in a Facebook group, but it can mean:
no warranty if the part cracks, deforms or does not fit
no liability if the product causes damage
wrong material choice (e.g. PLA where ABS/ASA/PA would be required)
Substandard print settings that reduce strength
lack of spare parts, updates and support
pirated models that harm creators and manufacturers
In the long run, it often becomes both more expensive and more unsafe.
Why companies are important for the development of the AM industry
When customers choose to buy from companies that maintain quality standards, invest in machinery, develop models and stand behind their products – the entire industry grows. This makes several things possible:
professional parts with higher strength and fit.
faster development of new products.
better customer experiences and communication.
safety and traceability.
long-term sustainability for creators and entrepreneurs.
By supporting serious players, you help drive innovation forward.
Conclusion: Online responsibility is a collaboration.
Buying AM-made products isn't just about price. It's about responsibility – for yourself, for safety, and for the development of the industry that so many of us are passionate about.
Choose companies that stand behind their products.
Choose manufacturers that offer a warranty and take responsibility.
Choose quality, safety and long-term sustainability.
This is how we, together, build a strong and sustainable AM future.
